Quick answer

Third party motor insurance is the legally mandatory cover for every vehicle in India. Its premium is fixed by IRDAI, so it is identical at every insurer — from ₹538 a year for a small two wheeler to ₹7,897 for a large car. TP-Sugam lets you compare available quotes across seven vehicle categories, choose your insurer and pay the insurer directly. The policy is issued and emailed to you in minutes.

IRDAI third-party rates have been revised. Motor third-party premiums were last revised on 1 June 2022. Revised rates take effect from 1 September 2026. Check the current slab for your vehicle →

What is Third Party Motor Insurance?

Third party motor insurance protects you against legal liability arising from accidental injury, death or property damage caused to a third party by the insured vehicle. It is mandatory for vehicles used in a public place as per the Motor Vehicles Act.

In short

It pays for the other person — not for your own vehicle.

Who is a “third party”?

A third party is any person other than the policyholder and the insurer — pedestrians, passengers in another vehicle, the driver of another vehicle, and owners of property damaged in the accident.

Why is third party insurance mandatory in India?

The requirement exists to protect the public. If a vehicle causes an accident, the injured person or the family of a deceased person must be able to recover compensation. Because the cover protects the public rather than the policyholder, IRDAI fixes its price instead of letting insurers compete on it.

What third party insurance does not cover

  • Damage to your own vehicle
  • Theft of your vehicle
  • Fire, flood or natural calamities affecting your vehicle
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Driving without a valid licence
  • Regular wear and tear

What does it cover?

Third party bodily injury

Legal liability for injury caused to a third party.

Third party death liability

Legal liability for death of a third party.

Third party property damage

Legal liability for damage to third-party property.

Statutory liability

Coverage as per applicable law, vehicle class and policy terms.

IRDAI Third Party Premium Rates 2026

Third party premium is set by IRDAI and notified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. It is identical at every insurance company in India and depends only on your vehicle category and engine capacity. Rates below exclude 18% GST.

Private car third party premium

Petrol and diesel cars by engine capacity

Engine capacityAnnual TP premiumWith 18% GST
Up to 1000 cc₹2,094₹2,470.92
1001 cc to 1500 cc₹3,416₹4,030.88
Above 1500 cc₹7,897₹9,318.46

Examples: Maruti Alto 800 (796 cc) — ₹2,094 · Maruti Swift (1197 cc) — ₹3,416 · Hyundai Creta (1497 cc) — ₹3,416 · Toyota Innova Crysta (2393 cc) — ₹7,897

Electric cars by battery capacity

Battery capacityAnnual TP premium
Not exceeding 30 kWh₹1,780
30 kWh to 65 kWh₹2,904
Exceeding 65 kWh₹6,712

Private electric vehicles receive a 15% discount on the third party premium and hybrid electric vehicles 7.5%.

Two wheeler third party premium

Engine capacity slabs

Two wheeler engine capacityAnnual TP premium
Up to 75 cc₹538
76 cc to 150 cc₹714
151 cc to 350 cc₹1,366
Above 350 cc₹2,804

Two wheeler third party rates are fixed by IRDAI on the same tariff principle as cars, and 18% GST applies on top.

Long-term five-year cover for new two wheelers

A new two wheeler must be covered by a five-year third party policy. The premium for the full term is collected upfront, which is why the first payment is higher than an annual renewal.

Commercial vehicle third party premium

Goods carrying vehicles (GCV)

Light goods vehicles

Small tempos, pickups and delivery vehicles. Lower gross vehicle weight keeps the third party premium at the lower end of the goods carrying tariff.

Medium and heavy goods vehicles

Multi-axle trucks, trailers and container vehicles. Higher gross vehicle weight and longer on-road exposure place these in the highest goods carrying slabs.

Passenger carrying vehicles (PCV)

Taxis and cabs

Metered taxis, app-based cabs and private hire vehicles are rated on engine capacity and seating capacity. A private car policy cannot be used for a commercial cab.

Buses and passenger vans

Passenger buses, staff buses and school buses are rated on permitted seating capacity and permit class.

Regulatory note

The seat count that determines the premium must match the registration certificate, and any change in seating capacity must be endorsed in the policy.

Is the third party premium the same at every insurer?

Yes. Third party premium rates are fixed by IRDAI, so they are the same at every insurance company for the same vehicle category and applicable slab. GST and any eligible discounts are applied as required.

Have third party rates changed in 2026?

Motor third party premiums were last revised on 1 June 2022. Insurers have since reported rising claim costs, and a June 2026 Supreme Court judgment recognising the economic value of unpaid domestic work by homemakers in compensation calculations has been estimated to raise the industry’s third party loss ratio by 12–15%. Revised rates have been notified with effect from 1 September 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TP-Sugam?

TP-Sugam is Quickinsure’s dedicated third party motor insurance journey. It lets you compare available third party quotes from multiple insurers across seven vehicle categories — Two Wheeler, Private Car, GCV, PCV, Tractor, Bus and Misc-D — choose your insurer, and pay the insurer directly through their authorised payment process.

Is TP-Sugam an IRDAI or Bima Sugam platform?

No. TP-Sugam is a Quickinsure platform, not an IRDAI or Bima Sugam platform. Quickinsure Insurance Brokers Private Limited is an IRDAI-registered direct life and general broker (License No. 579) and TP-Sugam is operated under that licence. Bima Sugam is a separate initiative.

Which vehicles can I insure through TP-Sugam?

Seven categories: Two Wheeler (bike and scooter), Private Car, GCV (goods carrying vehicles), PCV (passenger carrying vehicles), Tractor, Bus, and Misc-D for miscellaneous and special motor vehicles such as construction equipment.

Is third party motor insurance mandatory?

Yes. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every vehicle plying on a public road must have at least a third party insurance policy. Driving without it can attract a fine of ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 and, in some cases, imprisonment of up to three months.

Can I buy third party insurance online?

Yes. Select your vehicle type on TP-Sugam, enter your registration number, compare the available third party quotes from multiple insurers, choose your insurer and pay directly. The policy is issued by the insurer and emailed to you.

Does third party insurance cover damage to my own vehicle?

No. Third party insurance covers injury, death and property damage caused to others. Damage to your own vehicle, its theft, or loss in a fire or natural calamity is not covered — that requires a comprehensive policy or a standalone own-damage cover.

Can commercial vehicles buy TP insurance?

Yes. TP-Sugam covers commercial vehicles through four dedicated journeys: GCV for goods carrying vehicles, PCV for passenger carrying vehicles, Bus for passenger buses, and Misc-D for special and miscellaneous vehicles.

Who issues the insurance policy?

The insurance company you select issues the policy. Quickinsure acts as the broker — we compare available quotes, help you choose, and support you through the journey. The premium is paid directly to the insurer.
